The tides of Cape Porpoise in Kennebunkport, ME are more dramatic than any I’ve ever seen. In a matter of hours, 8-10 feet of water will empty completely allowing you to walk a half a mile across the sand flats to all of the nearby islands. It was an adventure to make the trek through the sand (calf-deep mud in some places), seaweed, and barnacle covered rocks to reach the Goat Island lighthouse. When we finally arrived we discovered that a couple of our friends had had the same idea and were waiting to greet us from atop the lighthouse. The view was spectacular, and we enjoyed the company of the light-keeper’s dogs for as long as possible before we had to turn back or risk having to swim home. Although it was a little rough on our bare feet, it was definitely an unforgettable experience.
